This term I have been using Sport Start for my PE programme. This was new to me. I followed the unit plan & the lesson cards. This programme has been great to teach the children how they can make their own adaptations to activities.
I made the most of Jason (an advisor for Sport Start from Sport Canterbury) coming in to mentor us. (See below)

Generic to all measurement
Need to
It is about getting students to articulate the complete measurement sentence. The essences of all measurement- How many fit? If you are doing a rubric - the task needs to be richer - which can show progress. Closed tasks = just teach Use rubrics once during a unit- this is only 1 of our tools. Next step: Use a starter plan to organise a 10 minute starter each day. This would benefit all of my students. It is important that there is diversity in the task and this is also helps to maintain learning. At Russell Street School we follow the Japanese Inquiry Model - Jugou Kenkyuu. Below are our scripts, notes & reflections.
Lesson Taught In Own Class
After perfecting our lesson I taught it to my class. I was blown away with the strategies my Year 3 & 4 students were using. Straight away they filled the shapes with blocks and started counting the squares.

Throughout the lesson ask - what are you measuring? with what? how many?
Keep reinforcing the language - no gaps, no over lays & Area Reduce wording on rubric Invisible squares - scaffolding - see photos below
Each week our class takes part in Chapter Chat which is run by Stephen Baker. The video below explains it in more detail.
Every Friday I work with my class & Flou7ish as we take part in Chapter Chat. We are currently focusing on writing high quality tweets. I created the poster below as I guide for answering questions. You can follow us on Twitter @RSSbrainbusters.
The Algebra FIOs are great - could use for your whole unit. Very rich in context. Look in the Teacher Notes in the middle to see what the concept of each task uses. Using the FIO task as a starter gives your lesson diversity and richness. This is another great resource for a stimulus. Main algebra concepts
