The needs in my class this year are quite high. I have 24 out of 26 below in reading. Due to the summer break, the data entered on our SMS at the end of 2018 differed significantly from what I was seeing in class. As a results I had to drop most kids about 5 levels before reaching an instructional reading level.
On a whole my class had low self-esteem when it came to reading. Parents commented that reading at home was a battle and they were really struggling. As a result of dropping right back, the class have now become more confident with their ability and are getting better at reading with fluency and expression. All students have individual reading goals. After meeting with Robin & Kelly we have put these changes in place:
Guided Reading - Changes to my programme:
Guided Writing - Changes to my programme:
This was a really beneficial session with Kerri. Next term will I have a group of 5 students who have not yet made the connection between letters and the sounds they make. We will follow this approach.
This term our science focus has been to observe. Throughout the term the students have become more specific about what they notice.
Our science is also inspiring our writing. It is cool to see my class are sharing their curiosity about science with the other students in Poutokomanawa.
First we will respond to the reading I have attached for you in this email. Please consider and be ready to discuss:
This will be followed by some workshopping to help us collectively answer the following questions:
Questions to reflect on
With older students I also got them to use the writing matrix to identify their writing level & set themselves goals. Also with older students I have always handed back maths knowledge tests and reading running records. This made it possible for students to identify goals. They were then able to use this information to inform what workshops to attend.
10 weeks of P4C has not been anywhere long enough! I can't wait to continue using P4C when I get back from my STLP.
I have been blown away with their way the students are starting to really listen & build on to each other's ideas. I have notice this transfer through in to our reading & maths discussions. Students are using specific language, such as, "I disagree that..." (rather than I disagree with you). Ethical questions such as "Was it right for the fox family to eat chickens?" has really got the students to challenge their own thinking. When opinions changed during a lesson, it was also so exciting. Especially when students could articulate their thinking had changed. Due to interruptions, 3 sessions of P4C were often impossible to fit in. Below are the minutes from our fortnightly meetings. Videos from my building on skills lesson
This year for Matariki we worked with Pīwakawaka to make our own kites. This video explains a bit of the process.
Following on from the writing workshops, I am now getting students to record evidence of their learning using Seesaw activities. This is an easy way to track who is coming to which workshop & how they are progressing with their goal.
